Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa – Bali – Hotel Review

Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa is a luxury eco hotel nestled in a working coffee plantation in the countryside of Northern Bali. The hideaway provides an authentic feel of the island and its culture while offering breathtaking views over Bali’s central mountains, the Java Sea and Java’s distinctive volcanoes. This hotel review will give you an overview of the resort’s highlights and the unique experiences Munduk Moding Plantation has to offer.

The Location

Munduk Moding Plantation is a beautiful nature getaway located in the peaceful North of Bali. Bali is a popular Indonesian island that sits between the islands of Java and Lombok. The boutique resort is about 80km (approximately a 2-hour drive) away from the international airport in Denpasar and is situated near the village of Munduk. It resides at an altitude of about 1000 meters above sea level and is close to the island’s three central lakes Bratan, Tamblingan and Buyan. The area is characterized by its lush rainforest environment with rice terraces, coffee plantations, numerous waterfalls and a much cooler climate compared to the famous beach areas in the south.

The Transfer & Check-in

After arriving at the Ngurah Rai International airport in Denpasar, you can hire a rental car or take a taxi to get to Munduk Moding Plantation. You can also arrange an airport transfer directly with the resort at an additional cost. In our case, we traveled to Munduk Moding Plantation by scooter which I would only recommend if you travel light and feel comfortable driving a scooter in Bali’s traffic.

When we arrived at Munduk Moding Plantation, we were greeted by a friendly security staff member who brought us and our luggage with a golf cart to the reception area. We were already awaited by the front office staff, who warmly welcomed us with a delicious ginger tea with cinnamon. It tasted so good that Carsten couldn’t resist asking for a second cup of tea. The registration procedure was uncomplicated and taken care of within minutes.

After check-in, we were guided to our one-bedroom villa and given information about all the amenities at the resort. They also provided us with a handy sheet with QR codes for quick and easy access to additional information such as a welcome letter, the restaurant menu and the offered experiences. You can also text a WhatsApp number to quickly get in touch with the butler team (which worked fantastic, by the way!).

The Property & Amenities

Munduk Moding Plantation offers a very intimate experience. It only features a few villas and suites to guarantee a feeling of privacy and serve every guest individually. Still, the eco resort offers everything you expect from a luxury boutique hotel.

The villas, suites and all the resort buildings incorporate features of Balinese architecture with a modern touch and blend in perfectly with the surrounding rainforest environment. The entire complex is also held in excellent condition despite being open for more than 10 years and being exposed to the ever-changing weather conditions of the North.

The reception area is located in the main building and features a small lobby. From there you can get to the main pool and restaurant. Munduk Moding Plantation has two restaurants and one bar in total.

The resort further offers a spa with two spacious (couple) treatment rooms and a third room with comfortable sitting options, reserved for pedicure and manicure treatments. In addition, the resort has a small gym.

If you take part in the daily activities of the “MMP Experience Programme”, most of them are held at the unique Bamboo Hall.

The most famous and iconic part of the resort are the two phenomenal infinity pools overlooking the stunning landscape. You can relax on the sun loungers all day while enjoying a cocktail or the complimentary afternoon tea served here. There is also a jacuzzi sitting in-between both pools. While I already stayed at many resorts around the world that feature infinity pools, the ones at Munduk Moding Plantation belong to my absolute favorites. You can´t beat the unparalleled views of these extraordinary infinity pools literally hanging in the clouds.

Munduk Moding Plantation is also a great place for hosting retreats at the plantation or for spending an unforgettable honeymoon.

The Rooms

As mentioned earlier in this review, Munduk Moding Plantation offers a truly intimate experience. All villas and suites provide absolute privacy. You can choose to stay in one of their Garden Suites, One Bedroom Villas, One Bedroom Pool Villas, their Two Bedroom Pool Villa, or Two Bedroom Coffee Villa and their Four Bedroom Pool Villa. All rooms offer magnificent views. WiFi is complimentary throughout the resort.

As this was already our second stay at Munduk Moding Plantation, we could experience two of their room types – the Garden Suite and the One Bedroom Pool Villa (with jacuzzi). Both rooms were amazing, but my favorite was the Pool Villa with jacuzzi. Let me tell you why and give you an overview of both room types:

One Bedroom Pool Villa

During our recent visit, we stayed at a beautiful One Bedroom Pool Villa with jacuzzi and we absolutely loved the luxurious features of this villa. Our villa (Frangipani) was located to the left of the main infinity pool, just a short walk downhill. Like all villas, the villa is nestled into the lush rainforest vegetation and offers unparalleled views of the valley and Java.

The spacious 110m² villa comprises a generous living room, a separate bedroom and a large bathroom. The bedroom is equipped with a four-poster bed and a working desk. The living room features a sofa with a small table as well as two daybeds next to a cozy fireplace. Due to the cold climate, we used the fireplace every evening. I really loved the romantic atmosphere!! There is also a tiny in-room library if you’d like to read a book in front of the fireplace.

The bathroom is accessible from the living room as well as the bedroom. It features an extensive wardrobe, a freestanding bathtub as well as an indoor shower.

Once you open the floor-to-ceiling windows of the living room, you can access the terrace with your very own heated private infinity pool and a hot jacuzzi. The outdoor area also features a dining table, a gazebo, an outdoor shower and two sun loungers with an umbrella. Sitting in the hot jacuzzi and simply enjoying the view over the coffee plantation was priceless!

Garden Suite

During our first time at Munduk Moding Plantation, we stayed at a Garden Suite. Compared to the Frangipani Villa, the suite is relatively small, with only 35m². The beautifully designed suites are close to the main building and also offer fantastic views.

The room features a four-poster bed and a sofa. Outside the room, you have a private terrace with a dining table. The en-suite bathroom has an indoor shower, a bathtub and a vanity with a big mirror. I actually liked the bathroom design of the Garden Suite even more than the one of the Pool Villa we stayed in but that’s just my personal taste. While being smaller compared to the other villas, this suite is a great way to enjoy Munduk Moding Plantation and its amenities on a smaller budget.

The Restaurants & Bars

When staying at Munduk Moding Plantation, you can dine in two different restaurants that have wonderful views – the two-story MiMPi as well as the Plantation Garden Restaurant. The meals blend international cuisine with local flavors and use fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The resort also applies a garden-to-table approach when it comes to herbs, spices and organic produce from their fruit and vegetable garden at the plantation.

MiMPi is the dedicated breakfast restaurant of the resort, offering Balinese as well as western breakfast options.

If you want to enjoy a drink, the sunset bar at the lower infinity pool offers various drinks and snacks for you to enjoy at the bar or the pool.

Munduk Moding Plantation also offers various private dining options. You can reserve a table for two in a romantic setting, including candle light in one of their pavilions, have dinner in the privacy of your own villa or have a floating breakfast in your pool.

We enjoyed our breakfast and dinner at the MiMPi restaurant. The food was delicious and the dishes were reasonably priced. Unfortunately, we felt like the attention to detail in the restaurant has slightly decreased compared to our first visit. During our first stay, the tables had tablecloths and decorations, giving the restaurant a more luxurious and chic feel, which wasn’t the case this time. Also, the love for detail regarding the presentation of the dishes was better last time, especially looking at the breakfast. For us, personally, it’s important that the food is also a sensation to the eyes. As already mentioned, the food itself was excellent, so if the presentation gets a little bit more loving attention again, it’s the perfect dining experience.

The Staff

During both our stays at Munduk Moding Plantation, the staff was terrific. The reception team and the butlers made sure we had everything we needed during our time at the resort. They always greeted us with a smile and were very cheerful. They were also quick to answer every question we had and handled every request effortlessly – whether it was serving afternoon tea at our villa, lighting up the fireplace, or sending information on the daily activities.

At MiMPi, the overall service was great but could be improved. During our recent stay, we had to go to the staff counter multiple times and ask for the menus because nobody approached us at the restaurant’s outside tables. Here, we would have loved the staff to be more proactive. However, once we got the menus, the service quickly took orders and served the food in a timely manner.

Overall, the hospitality at Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa is fantastic and the staff cares about your well-being.

Activities

Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa offers various activities that make your stay even more memorable. First, they have the “MMP Experience Programme”, where overnight guests can participate in complimentary daily activities to discover nature and local culture. These include but aren’t limited to coffee classes, yoga classes, bird watching, bamboo straw making, playing the gamelan, and many more. You can also join a guided morning trek through the plantation or take a shuttle bus to explore the nearby lakes and local temples.

We decided to join a workshop on making local Balinese offerings from flowers, plants and bamboo. In this hands-on class, we learned a lot about the culture, offerings and local ceremonies. Moreover, we joined the traditional coffee processing demonstration workshop. We were given information on the Arabica and Robusta beans that grow at the plantation and how they are traditionally processed to produce Balinese Coffee. I can highly recommend both classes!

Ultimately, guests can book additional activities such as an extensive trekking trip, horseback riding or a mountain biking tour around North Bali.

Spa & Wellness

If you want to completely unwind at Munduk Moding Plantation, you should visit the resort’s fantastic Spa. The Spa specializes in a wide range of treatments, including the traditional Balinese massage. Make sure to book in advance because you don’t want to miss having a relaxing massage when staying at Munduk Moding Plantation.

During both our visits, we enjoyed a treatment at the Spa. We tried the MMP Signature massage that combines the traditional Balinese massage with a hot stone and aromatherapy massage and we also tested the traditional Balinese massage. Both treatments were amazing! I especially loved the comfortable heated massage beds.

Sustainability

As Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa is a luxury Eco Green Hotel, they have various sustainability measures in place. For example, all their organic waste is composted in their compositing center and used on their land. Moreover, everything else is recycled.

Looking at nature, there are many indigenous plants and flowers as well as a great variety of birdlife on the plantation. Part of the plantation is also gradually left to nature so that the original rainforest can regenerate.

What I really like is that the resort grows their own vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices and flowers at the plantation.

The resort further supports locals from the nearby villages and works with local coffee farmers to pool resources.

The One Unique Thing

The One Unique Thing of Munduk Moding Plantation is the fact that the resort is situated in a working coffee plantation. So, while staying at a luxury resort including all amenities, you can experience local coffee making and wander around the plantation at the same time. If you love coffee and nature, this is the place to be!

Conclusion

Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa is a luxurious eco hideaway located in the most beautiful and peaceful natural setting. I absolutely loved the authentic charm and the intimate experience that this resort has to offer. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and the amenities include everything you need for a relaxing getaway. My favorite parts of our experience at Munduk Moding Plantation were our cozy pool villa with jacuzzi, the daily complimentary activities and the iconic infinity pools. The resort is a great place for couples, honeymooners as well as families looking for a relaxing vacation including memorable experiences. I can highly recommend staying at Munduk Moding Plantation and I’m sure we will return to this beautiful resort as it’s our favorite hotel in North Bali.
