Maya Sanur Resort & Spa – Bali – Hotel Review

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa is a five-star luxury resort right at the beach in Sanur, Bali. The resort combines traditional Balinese hospitality with modern design. Its beachfront location offers impressive vistas over the azure ocean. This hotel review will point out the resort’s highlights and the unique experiences Maya Sanur offers.

The Location

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa is located in Sanur in the south-eastern part of Bali. Sanur is a former fishing village and has become a popular spot for tourists due to its beachside location. The resort is only a short drive (15km/25 minutes) from the international airport in Denpasar. It is situated along Sanur’s 5 km long shoreline, which offers incredible sunrise views and a laid-back atmosphere. It’s the perfect location for a couple or family vacation.

The Transfer & Check-in

When arriving in Bali at the Ngurah Rai international airport in Denpasar, you can either arrange to be picked up by an airport shuttle organized by the resort (at an additional cost if it’s not included in your hotel booking package) or take a taxi or rental car. We traveled to Maya Sanur by scooter because we went there for a mini getaway with little luggage. The resort also has a parking garage where we could park our scooter for free.

When we arrived at Maya Sanur, we were welcomed by three friendly bellboys who took care of our luggage and brought us to the reception for check-In. The reception staff handled the registration procedure very smoothly and provided some more details about the resort while we enjoyed our welcome drinks.

From there, we were escorted to our Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suite and got a short explanation of the room and its amenities. We were also given an E-Concierge QR code to scan for more information about their services and experiences.

The Property & Amenities

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa is a beautiful beachfront escape. Although it has more than 100 rooms, the resort provides an exclusive feel because it stretches over a large property. Being a five-star luxury resort, Maya Sanur offers all amenities you need for a relaxing vacation.

All the rooms and resort facilities have a modern, contemporary and stylish design. The reception and lobby area is really spacious and located on the second floor of the main building. Here you can also find a viewing platform that offers a fantastic view over the unique lagoon pool. It’s also a great spot for taking a picture.

Maya Sanur features three restaurants and a multi-level bar that offers impressive views of the sea.

Moreover, the resort has an entire area focused on health, where you can find the Spa at Maya, a fitness center and a dedicated yoga studio for yoga, meditation and Pilates practices.

The resort also features four pools – one family pool with a separate kid’s pool next to it, the already mentioned Lagoon Pool with an impressive length of 158m, and the infinity-edge beach pool with a view onto the sea. The infinity pool was my favorite!

In addition, the resort has a gallery, a kids club and a lounge. Maya Sanur is also a possible meeting or wedding venue.

The Rooms

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa offers 103 rooms and suites, from luxurious guest rooms to unique seafront pool suites. You can choose from five different room categories: Wonderful Garden View Rooms, Wonderful Pool Access Rooms, Impressive Nest Suites, Impressive Lagoon Pool Suites, and the exclusive Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suite. WiFi is complimentary throughout the resort and in the rooms. We stayed in a Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suite with a private pool. Let me give you an overview of this exclusive room type:

Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suite

The Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suite is the ultimate suite for honeymooners and everyone who wants to treat themselves to something special. Our suite overlooked the resort’s infinity pool and offered unparalleled sea and sunrise views.

The spacious room has 122 square meters and features a bed-/ living room, a large bathroom and an outdoor area with sunbeds and a private pool. Some unique amenities of the room include a coffee machine and a Bluetooth speaker dock.

The bed- and living room consists of a comfortable 2m x 2m king bed, a working desk, a sofa and a comfy daybed in front of the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. The bathroom features a large freestanding circular bathtub (big enough for two persons), an indoor shower, two vanities, and a huge wardrobe.

My favorite feature of the suite was our very own infinity pool. The sunrise view from the pool over the sea was simply incredible. The private pool is also the perfect spot to enjoy a floating breakfast in the privacy of your own suite. I can definitely recommend booking one of the only 8 available Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suites if you want to experience the resort’s best room. We absolutely loved the suite – it was such a treat!

The Restaurants & Bars

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa offers multiple dining options as well as in-villa dining. The resort features three restaurants that serve dishes from around the world and one bar.

The Mayasari is the resort’s main breakfast restaurant and offers indoor as well as alfresco outdoor dining. It blends international favorites with Balinese classics. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed due to renovation during our stay. So, we had breakfast at the glass pavilion instead, where we could enjoy the beautiful sea views from the terrace. The breakfast was served buffet-style. We loved the great bakery and fruit selection, however, we missed to have some more Western breakfast options such as pancakes or waffles, which would have been really nice.

Graze is an all-day dining restaurant and serves casual Australian brunch-style dishes as well as pastries and lunch. If you are a fan of the Japanese kitchen, head to Kuu for lunch or dinner. It offers classics such as sushi and sashimi as well as innovative fusion dishes. Maya Sanur also prepares a complimentary daily afternoon tea with Indonesian snacks between 4 and 5 pm, served at the glass pavilion.

If you want to enjoy a fresh, handcrafted cocktail or mocktail by the pool or have light bites with a beach and ocean view, the Tree Bar is the place to be. It’s open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. The trendy place has multiple levels to sit and offers delicious dishes inspired by Mediterranean cuisine. We indulged in a three-course lunch including mocktails and it was terrific. The dishes were fantastic in taste, quality as well as presentation. I can highly recommend dining at the Tree Bar when staying at the resort.

The Staff

Throughout our stay, the entire staff of the resort was fantastic. The team always greeted us with a smile and made us feel welcome. The staff of all food outlets was very attentive and quick to take orders. They really take pride in delivering outstanding service and taking care of your culinary wellbeing. Also, the team members of the Spa at Maya, provided an excellent spa experience by taking the time to explain the various oils and scrubs and leading us through our treatment. This is the kind of hospitality you want to see in a five-star luxury resort, and the whole staff did very well.

The only thing that could be improved, in our opinion, is that the staff could clean the area around the pools more often from the fallen leaves of the trees to look more aesthetic.

Activities

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa offers various activities. Most of the activities are in-house experiences.

If you stay in an impressive Lagoon Pool Suite or Heavenly Ocean View Pool Suite, you can start your day with a floating journey – also known as a floating breakfast. We had a floating breakfast in our private pool on our last morning and it was the perfect way to end our stay with a special experience. We fully enjoyed the delicious breakfast (try the Green Goddess smoothie bowl!) while admiring the incredible ocean backdrop. Such a delight!

You can also join a cooking class with the resort’s chefs and learn more about Indonesian and Asian cuisine. Or maybe you prefer to have a private picnic as a special experience which comes with a picnic basket filled with sweet and savory light snacks. We had a countryside picnic basket for lunch, which we enjoyed by the beachfront infinity pool. It was such a lovely experience and all the snacks were super delicious.

However, the ultimate special dining experience offered by Maya Sanur, is the romantic dinner at Green Roof 360, the resort’s rooftop garden and highest point. The magical candlelight dinner with musical accompaniment and a personal butler is an absolute dream. Sampling culinary delights with your loved one in a tent under the stars in utmost privacy – what else can you wish for? It truly was an unforgettable experience and the absolute highlight of our stay at Maya Sanur.

In between all the exceptional dining activities, you can also join the complimentary weekly activities that range from Pilates to meditation to different kinds of yoga (including aqua yoga). Moreover, the resort provides free bicycles that you can use to explore the surrounding area. Or you can have a photo session with a photographer within the resort.

Spa & Wellness

When you’re in Bali, a Spa visit is a must! The Spa at Maya is an excellent place to unwind and relax. It’s located right next to the lagoon pool and features 6 private double treatment rooms. On the menu, you can find traditional massages, body scrubs, facials as well as signature massages and packages.

We opted for the two-hour signature Maya Escape treatment. We were welcomed with some fresh ginger tea and the spa staff presented us a selection of massage oils and body scrubs. The treatment included a traditional Balinese massage, a body scrub and a relaxing flower bath. Our therapists did a great job leading us through the entire treatment, finding the perfect balance between pressure and relaxation for the massage and ensuring that we had a pleasant spa experience.

The One Unique Thing

While Maya Sanur has various remarkable features, the One Unique Thing and standout feature is its 158-meter-long Lagoon Pool nestled into lush greenery along the entire building’s length. While a pool may be a standard feature of a great luxury resort, not many resorts come up with such an impressive and extraordinary pool design. In addition, the daybed nests from the unique Nest Suites and Lagoon Pool Suites, give the pool an even more exciting look.

Conclusion

Maya Sanur Resort & Spa is a luxurious 5-star beachfront resort. The resort offers everything you need for a relaxing vacation – from beautiful pools to excellent restaurants to unique experiences, the resort has it all. I absolutely loved the modern, stylish design of the rooms and the incredible sunrise views. What I also really liked were the daily complimentary activities which are a nice additional service offering. Maya Sanur is the perfect place for couples, honeymooners and families looking for a relaxing vacation with focus on culinary wellbeing and special experiences. We had a wonderful stay at Maya Sanur. I can definitely recommend this resort and I would stay here again anytime.

  1. Hello! Would you still recommend this place now? Tossing up between the Andaz or Maya but price wise there is a huge difference!

    1. Hi Mat, as I haven’t stayed at the Andaz, I cannot really compare them, but I can definitely recommend staying at Maya Sanur. We had a lovely time there and would stay there again anytime.
