How to Get to Folegandros, Greece

If you’re wondering how to reach Folegandros, the only way to get there is by ferry. There’s no airport on this small Greek island. Therefore, the most common route is to fly into Athens, Santorini, or Mykonos, and then catch a ferry to Folegandros. These islands offer frequent ferry departures, especially during the high season.

If you’re coming from Athens, the ferry ride can take anywhere from 4 to 7 hours, depending on the type of vessel you choose (the Athens to Folegandros ferry time varies a lot between high-speed and conventional ferries).

I highly recommend combining your visit to Folegandros with a short trip to Athens or a longer island-hopping adventure through the Cyclades to explore nearby islands like Milos, Santorini, Paros, and Naxos.

We arrived in Folegandros from Milos, which was quick and easy. After our three-day stay, we continued our Greek island-hopping trip by ferry to Santorini – a short journey that took just over an hour (the Folegandros to Santorini ferry time is typically 50 to 75 minutes).

Even though several ferry companies operate routes to Folegandros, make sure to book your ferry tickets in advance during the summer, as spots can fill up quickly, especially on popular routes.

How to Get Around Folegandros

Getting around Folegandros is easy thanks to its size. As this small island has just one main road, you won’t need to worry about getting lost. There are a few different transport options to choose from, depending on how much flexibility you want during your stay.

Public buses run regularly and stop at all the major points on the island, including Chora, the port of Karavostasis, Agali Beach, and Ano Meria. It’s a budget-friendly way to get around, but you’ll need to keep an eye on the timetable, especially if you’re planning to catch a sunset or explore beyond the main stops.

For more freedom, we recommend renting a car. A rental car gives you full control over your schedule – no need to check bus times, and you can stop wherever and whenever you like. It’s also a better option than an ATV rental if the Meltemi winds are strong, which they often are in summer. While ATVs are fun, they leave you exposed to the wind and sun.

Unless you plan to venture into the remote northwest corner of the island, where a few 4×4 roads exist, any car will do just fine.

Best Time to Visit Folegandros

We visited Folegandros in October, right at the end of the tourist season, and had almost the entire island to ourselves. The quiet atmosphere gave us a chance to slow down and soak in the authentic experience that Folegandros is known for. However, one downside was that many restaurants had already closed for the season, so dining options were limited.

If you’re after tranquility and want to avoid the summer crowds, early October is a fantastic time to go. The weather is still pleasant, the sea is warm enough for swimming, and the sunsets are just as breathtaking. That said, being a small island with few year-round residents, Folegandros almost entirely shuts down during the off-season.

For a livelier atmosphere with everything in full swing, summer (June to early September) is the most popular time to visit. Expect warm, sunny days perfect for beach hopping, sunset dinners, and boat trips. Plus, the crowds are still manageable. July and August are the busiest months, with the hottest weather, the highest number of tourists and prices at their peak, so be sure to book ferries and accommodation well in advance if you’re traveling then.

If you’re looking for a quieter yet vibrant vibe, spring (May to early June) is ideal. The island is lush and green, the sea begins to warm up, and most hotels and restaurants are already open for the season. It’s also a wonderful time for hiking, with pleasant temperatures and blooming wildflowers along the trails.

Where to Stay in Folegandros

Chora is probably the most convenient base, as it’s the island’s main hub. Most of the shops, restaurants, and cafes are located here, making it easy to explore on foot. If you want to be close to the action, this is your best bet. You’ll also find a range of hotels and accommodations to suit various budgets.

We stayed in Karavostasi at a lovely boutique apartment called AMO Folegandros, which featured incredible sea views and a private jacuzzi. It was within walking distance to the port and the perfect location for us, with several tavernas and restaurants nearby. Vardia Beach is also just a short stroll away, offering a lovely spot for a dip. Plus, it’s a great starting point for day trips and excursions around the island.

If you want to splurge on your accommodation, Onar Suites & Villas – also located in Karavostasi – is an excellent choice.

If your idea of paradise involves relaxing by the beach, Agali is the most popular destination. This area is home to Folegandros’ best beach, making it ideal if you just want to soak up the sun. I highly recommend checking out Blue Sand Boutique Hotel & Suites. Agali is also a great launch point for trips to other nearby beaches. The location is peaceful and shielded from the wind, offering a chilled-out vibe that’s perfect for unwinding.

If you crave peace and authenticity, Ano Meria is a rural village located in the island’s interior. Surrounded by rolling hills of farmland, it’s an excellent choice if you are a hiking enthusiast or seeking to escape the crowds. I recommend staying at AGADA Folegandros Suites & Villas for a peaceful Folegandros escape.

Day 1 in Folegandros: Explore Chora

The first day of your Folegandros itinerary is all about Chora, the island’s charming capital. Spend your day wandering through its narrow streets, exploring the picturesque Kastro neighborhood, and soaking in breathtaking views from the town’s scenic viewpoints. As the day winds down, catch the stunning sunset at the Church of Panagia, followed by a delicious dinner, where you can savor the island’s fresh, local flavors.

Wander through the charming streets of Chora

Start your day by exploring Chora, the island’s main town and most picturesque place. Chora is filled with winding streets and squares lined with whitewashed buildings, creating a quintessential Greek island atmosphere. As you stroll through Chora, you’ll pass an array of charming shops, restaurants, and cafés, offering everything from unique souvenirs to breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I absolutely loved the laid-back atmosphere of Chora and getting lost in its labyrinth-like alleys, stopping every few steps to snap photos of its countless picturesque corners.

Chora’s relaxed vibe makes it the perfect place to soak in the island’s unique beauty and local life. Pause at a local café to enjoy a coffee while people-watching, or wander into one of the boutique shops for a special souvenir of your time on the island.

Explore the picturesque Kastro neighborhood

Next, head to the Kastro neighborhood, one of Chora’s oldest and most quaint areas. This historic district, also known as the Venetian Castle of Folegandros, is perched on a steep cliff, offering stunning views of the island and the sea below. It was initially built to protect the locals from pirate raids and is inhabited since then. 

Wander through its narrow, cobbled streets, and discover the charm of its traditional whitewashed houses and quaint alleys. Kastro is a lovely escape that provides a glimpse into the island’s past, making it a must-visit spot on your itinerary.

Soak in the views from Chora’s scenic viewpoints

Now, make your way to check out Chora’s scenic viewpoints, where you can soak in breathtaking views of the island and the surrounding sea. A great spot is the courtyard of the Church of Saint Mary Most Holy Queen of All, which offers panoramic views that will leave you in awe. 

Alternatively, you can head to the viewpoint marked on Google Maps, which is another excellent spot to capture stunning photos of the island’s rugged beauty. 

Watch the sunset at the Church of Panagia

One of the best things to do in Folegandros is to watch the sunset at the Church of Panagia. Just follow the zigzag path from Pounda Square and after about 15 minutes you will reach the famous one-aisle basilica with its many domes, tall bell tower, and large courtyard. Located on a hill, this iconic church offers panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea. 

It’s by far my favorite sunset-watching spot and absolutely worth the effort of walking all the way up to the church. We experienced the most magical sunset there on our first evening in Folegandros. It was the perfect way to end the day, soaking in the peaceful beauty of the island as the sun dipped below the horizon.

Enjoy a delicious dinner at Belegra Aegean Tastes

After a day of exploring, enjoy a delicious dinner at Belegra Aegean Tastes, a fantastic spot to experience the flavors of Folegandros. We absolutely loved dining here! This cozy restaurant offers a variety of local dishes, made with fresh ingredients that perfectly capture the essence of Greek cuisine.

Whether you’re looking for traditional seafood or a tapas-style dinner, Belegra provides a perfect combination of great food, friendly service, and a lovely setting with a relaxed atmosphere. We cannot recommend this place enough!

Day 2 in Folegandros: Discover Folegandros’ Beautiful Beaches

Day 2 of our Folegandros itinerary is all about the island’s stunning beaches. Start with a delicious breakfast in Chora, then head to Agali Beach for some sun and relaxation. From there, follow the coastal path to Agios Nikolaos Beach before you take a boat to the secluded Livadaki Beach for a peaceful escape in the afternoon. 

Have breakfast at Pounta

Start your second day in Folegandros with a wholesome breakfast at Pounta. This family-run café offers the perfect setting to begin your day – sit outside and watch the hustle and bustle of the town or enjoy the peaceful ambiance inside, surrounded by a beautiful garden with palm trees.

Pounta serves homemade cakes, various egg dishes, crepes with yogurt, fruit and honey, freshly squeezed orange juice, delicious cappuccino, and so much more. It’s our favorite breakfast spot in Folegandros. Whether you’re in the mood for a light snack or a more filling brunch, Pounta is the ideal place to fuel up before heading out to explore the island’s stunning beaches.

Relax at Agali Beach

Next, head to Agali Beach, one of the best beaches in Folegandros. With its soft sand and crystal-clear waters, it’s the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. Agali Beach is easily accessible from Chora and offers a laid-back atmosphere, making it a great place to unwind for a few hours. Of all the beaches we visited in Folegandros, Agali was our favorite! It’s set in a stunning bay and surrounded by a few cafés and restaurants, all offering amazing views of the water. Whether you’re swimming, working on your tan, or simply enjoying the scenery, Agali Beach is a must-visit during your stay.

Follow the coastal path to Agios Nikolaos Beach

After enjoying the beauty of Agali Beach, follow the coastal path to your right to Agios Nikolaos Beach. It’s a short but scenic walk with beautiful sea views and more bays along the way. We really enjoyed this hike! Just make sure to bring water, sunscreen, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun.

Alternatively, you can take a boat to Agios Nikolaos Beach. The beach itself features two traditional tavernas, a lovely chapel, and a mix of sand and pebbles. It’s shaded by trees, making it a perfect place to relax in nature. Whether you’re hiking or taking the taxi boat, Agios Nikolaos Beach is a peaceful and picturesque spot to spend some time.

Enjoy a seaside lunch with a view at O Psaromiligkas

To satisfy your hunger you can either stay at Agios Nikolaos Beach or head back to Agali Beach (like we did) to enjoy a seaside lunch with a view at O Psaromiligkas. This charming taverna serves delicious, fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes, all accompanied by a stunning view of the Aegean Sea.

We really loved the relaxed atmosphere, and the views are truly unparalleled. I highly recommend trying their traditional ladenia pie – it’s out of this world!

Take a boat to the secluded Livadaki Beach

Once you have finished your lunch, take a taxi boat to the secluded Livadaki Beach. During the summer months, regular boats depart from Agali Beach every 30 to 60 minutes and getting to Livadaki Beach takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The price is 12 EUR per person (return). However, as we visited at the end of the season, the boats were no longer running.

Alternatively, you can hike to the beach from Ano Meria, which takes you about 45 minutes to 1 hour each way. Livadaki is a beautiful beach with small pebbles and natural shade provided by a few trees. Just be sure to bring your own drinks and snacks, as there are no amenities on the beach. 

Dinner at O Psaromiligkas

For dinner, we returned to O Psaromiligkas because we loved it so much at lunch. The menu was filled with so many delicious, traditional dishes we wanted to try, but we couldn’t fit them all in during our midday meal, so we just had to come back. With its fresh seafood, authentic Greek flavors, and beautiful seaside setting, it was the perfect spot for a relaxed evening.

Day 3 in Folegandros: Explore Folegandros’ Hidden Gems

Start your third day in Folegandros with a boat ride to the beautiful Katergo Beach, then explore the charming town of Ano Meria before hiking to the Aspropounta Lighthouse for breathtaking views. End the day with a visit to the serene Chapel of Chrysopigi, where you can enjoy stunning coastal views.

Visit Katergo Beach by boat from Karavostasi

Your first stop is the stunning Katergo Beach, which is best accessed by boat from Karavostasi port. While you can hike to the beach from the rural Livadi settlement (about 20 to 30 minutes with a tricky finish), the most convenient option is the hourly local taxi boat, which costs 12 EUR for a return trip and takes just 10 minutes.

The beach features a sandy stretch with a few pebbles and crystal-clear water, perfect for a peaceful swim. There are no facilities or shade, so make sure to bring sunscreen, water, food, and an umbrella (if you have one) for a comfortable day at this secluded paradise.

Discover the town of Ano Meria

After spending some time at the beach, make your way to Ano Meria, the second-largest town in the northwestern part of the island. Unlike the lively streets of Chora, this authentic island village stretches about 3 kilometers along the main road and offers a quiet, rural atmosphere with traditional stone houses, terraced farmland, and sweeping views of the hills. There are also a few charming tavernas and cafés, which make the town perfect for a relaxed break.

Ano Meria is also the best place to stay if you love hiking. Most of the island’s trails begin here, leading to secluded beaches like Avlaki, Dentro, Ambeli, Ligaria, Agios Georgios, and Serfiotiko, as well as to Livadaki Beach and the Aspropounta Lighthouse.

Hike to the Aspropounta Lighthouse

One of the most rewarding hikes in Folegandros is the trail to the Aspropounta Lighthouse, and it’s well worth carving out time for. Starting from Ano Meria, the hike takes about 60 minutes and is probably the most popular walking route on the island. However, if you’re not big on hiking, there’s a shorter path from Livadaki Beach (15 minutes), which you can reach by boat from Agkali – making it easy to include during your beach day instead.

The lighthouse itself was built in 1919 and stands proudly on a rocky cliff above the Aegean Sea. The 11-meter-tall whitewashed tower with its lantern on top is iconic in its simplicity, but the real highlight is the view. From the cliffs, you’ll be treated to incredible panoramas of the deep blue sea stretching endlessly into the horizon.

Visit the Chapel of Chrysopigi

Wrap up your final day in Folegandros with a visit to the Chapel of Chrysopigi, a small whitewashed church tucked away at the western end of the island. Surrounded by rugged cliffs and overlooking the Aegean Sea, it’s a peaceful and scenic spot that feels worlds away from everything.

It’s also a great sunset viewpoint, which is usually not as crowded as the popular Church of Panagia in Chora. So, if you’re looking to end your Folegandros trip with a magical sunset, possibly all to yourself, this spot is definitely worth the visit.
