How to Get to Ios, Greece

With no airport on the island, the best way to reach Ios is by ferry. You can opt to fly into Athens, Santorini, Naxos, or Mykonos before embarking on a scenic ferry ride to Ios. Therefore, Ios is an ideal addition to any Cyclades island-hopping itinerary or as a destination to explore after spending one or two days in Athens.

From Athens, you can catch a ferry from the ports of Piraeus or Rafina. Alternatively, if you’re arriving in Santorini, Naxos, or Mykonos, frequent ferry services connect these popular destinations to Ios.

Tip: I recommend booking your ferry tickets in advance if you visit Ios during the summer months.

How to Get Around Ios

From our personal experience, renting a car is the optimal choice for exploring Ios at your own pace. While alternatives like ATVs or scooters may initially seem appealing to some people, our experience with the winding mountain roads and strong winds during our stay reaffirmed our decision to opt for a rental car.

With a car, you can effortlessly explore the island regardless of the weather conditions. Plus, having your own vehicle grants you the flexibility to discover hidden gems off the beaten path and tailor your itinerary, including the time spent at each spot, to perfectly suit your preferences.

Alternatively, you can also get a taxi or use the bus network for various stops around the island.

Best Time to Visit Ios

The best time to visit Ios is during the shoulder months of June and September. During these times, the weather is pleasantly warm, and the island is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience. Additionally, hotel rates are generally a bit lower if you are traveling on a budget.

If you prefer the lively atmosphere of summer, July and August offer vibrant nightlife and bustling beaches, but be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices.

We visited Ios in late September when the crowds had already left, allowing us to enjoy the beaches and sights without the usual hustle and bustle – a pleasant experience we truly appreciated.

Where to Stay in Ios, Greece

When it comes to accommodations in Ios, there’s something for every traveler’s taste and budget. The island offers a range of options, from luxurious beachfront resorts to charming boutique hotels and cozy guesthouses.

If you’re looking for a vibrant atmosphere, the main town of Chora is an excellent choice. Alternatively, if you want more tranquility, seaside villages like Mylopotas offer serene retreats with stunning views.

We stayed between Chora and Mylopotas, enabling us to easily reach both areas on foot, which was fantastic.

If you only have one day in Ios:

If you find yourself with just one day to explore the island of Ios, I recommend starting your day with a stroll through the charming streets of Chora, taking in the traditional Cycladic architecture and picturesque alleyways. Don’t miss the Odysseas Elytis Theatre and the Church of Panagia Gremiotissa.

Then, head to Mylopotas Beach for a relaxing afternoon by the crystal-clear waters. In the evening, soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Chora’s nightlife scene, with its array of bars, tavernas, and clubs.

If you have 5 days in Ios island:

If you are lucky enough to have five days to explore Ios, there are many other fun experiences waiting to be discovered. In addition to the highlights of our 3-day itinerary, I highly recommend embarking on a scenic boat tour around the island’s coastline, offering breathtaking views and opportunities for swimming in secluded coves.

For a taste of local culture, a visit to the Ios winery, where you can sample the island’s finest wines, is a must.

Ios is also known as the island of churches. So, you could explore Ios’ rich religious heritage by visiting some of its over 300 churches, such as the Byzantine church at Pirgos, nestled atop the island’s highest point at 713 meters.

Complete 3 Days in Ios Itinerary

Day 1 in Ios: Explore Chora (Ios Town)

On our first day in Ios, we strolled through Chora’s charming alleys, visited the Church of Panagia Gremiotissa and the Odysseas Elytis Theatre, and ended the day watching the sunset from the windmills of Ios.

Walk around Chora

Kick off your first of your 3 days in Ios by exploring the enchanting main town of Chora. Lose yourself in its maze of whitewashed alleys capturing the essence of the traditional Cycladic architecture. Wander past quaint shops, cozy cafes, and authentic tavernas, immersing yourself in Chora’s relaxed atmosphere.

I thoroughly enjoyed the laid-back vibe of Ios Town during the day, especially in contrast to the bustling main towns of other more renowned Greek islands.

Take your time to soak up the unique charm of Chora with its old, traditional houses, photogenic corners, and colorful bougainvillea. If you like, you can stop by the small Archaeological Museum in the center of Chora to learn more about the ancient town of Ios and the prehistoric settlement of Skarkos.

Visit Panagia Gremiotissa

Perched atop the hill overlooking Chora, the Church of Panagia Gremiotissa, which is dedicated to the island’s patron saint, is the most iconic landmark of the island of Ios. The lovely church boasts stunning panoramic views of Chora’s white houses, the bustling port, the shimmering Aegean Sea, as well as the surrounding Cycladic landscape. It’s a must-visit place during your three days in Ios.

Tip: As you ascend the path from Panagia Gremiotissa, you’ll encounter three other quaint chapels nestled amidst the tranquil hillside. Make sure to follow the small path to the top of the hill for the best views.

Admire the Odysseas Elytis Theatre

Situated at the edge of Chora, the Odysseas Elytis Theatre stands as one of the most captivating Ios attractions. This open-air amphitheater, inspired by ancient Greek architecture and named after the Greek Nobel laureate poet Odysseas Elytis, offers not only cultural performances but also striking views of the Aegean Sea, Mylopotas Beach, and the scenic landscape.

Admire the impressive architecture of this colossal marble amphitheater with its breathtaking backdrop of the azure waters. The spectacular views truly left me speechless!

The theatre is a focal point for cultural events on the island and hosts a diverse array of performances, including musical concerts and plays, throughout the summer months.

Insider Tip: Be sure to experience the incredible acoustics of this amphitheater firsthand – stand in the center of the stage and let your voice resonate to immerse yourself in the magic of this place.

Watch the sunset from the windmills of Ios

Near the Odysseas Elytis Theatre, you’ll find the old windmills of Ios, offering a mesmerizing view of the island’s enchanting landscape. This secluded spot is perfect for witnessing the sunset without the crowds after a day of exploring Chora. The iconic windmills provide a picturesque background as the golden sun sets below the horizon, casting a warm glow over Chora’s whitewashed buildings and the azure sea. It’s the perfect vantage point to soak in the beauty of this moment.

We had this place all to ourselves, as most people opt to watch the sunset from the Church of Panagia Gremiotissa, arguably the most popular spot for sunset viewing in Ios. However, we were drawn to the panoramic views of the windmills, the sea, and the town, with the iconic church serving as a stunning backdrop. It was an unforgettable experience!

Day 2 in Ios: Discover the Best Beaches in Ios

On our second day in Ios, we embarked on an unforgettable journey to discover the island’s most stunning beaches. With its pristine shores, crystal-clear waters, and powdery sands, Ios is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Cyclades. So, if you’re craving sun, sea, and relaxation, don’t miss the opportunity to soak up the beauty of Ios’ beaches during your time on the island.

Mylopotas Beach

Located about 2 kilometers south of Chora, you can find the renowned Mylopotas Beach. As the island’s most popular beach, Mylopotas boasts golden sands, clear blue water, and excellent amenities, making it the perfect destination for a day of relaxation and seaside fun close to the main town.

From beach bars serving refreshing cocktails to adventurous water sports activities, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Plus, its close proximity to Chora ensures easy access, with frequent bus services available if you don’t feel like walking or driving there. We really loved this beach!

Manganari Beach

Situated approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Chora, Manganari Beach (also known as Magganari) is our personal favorite among all the beaches in Ios. Comprising four beautiful beaches nestled side by side, Manganari features crystal-clear waters and soft, inviting sands. We spent a few hours relaxing at this beautiful beach.

Whether by car or bus from Chora, Manganari is easily accessible and offers all the amenities you need, from water sports activities to lively beach bars playing music, along with quieter spots for peaceful relaxation.

Psathi Beach

Next, head to Psathi Beach, located on the eastern side of the island. This lovely bay has deep blue waters and a long stretch of sandy beach. With its large rocks dotting the shoreline and a stone-filled seabed, Psathi is not only ideal for snorkeling but also perfect for swimming and windsurfing.

While partly organized with sunbeds and umbrellas available, much of the beach remains untouched, offering a peaceful atmosphere if you are looking for a quieter place.

Agia Theodoti Beach

Located approximately 10 kilometers north of Chora, Agia Theodoti Beach is known for its pristine beauty and relaxed vibe. Featuring golden sands and azure waters, this picturesque beach provides the perfect backdrop for swimming, snorkeling, and basking in the sun.

The beach offers organized facilities, including sunbeds and umbrellas available for rent. For an added touch of history, consider visiting the 16th-century Byzantine church of St. Theodoti, which stands as the oldest church on the island and is located in Agia Theodoti.

Gialos Beach

Situated just below Chora, Gialos Beach, also known as Yialos, awaits just a stone’s throw away from the bustling port of Ios. Organized with essential tourist amenities like umbrellas and sunbeds, the beach is surrounded by a variety of taverns, bars, and accommodations.

Despite its popularity, Gialos is a bit less frequented than its counterpart, Mylopotas Beach. Still, we found Mylopotas Beach to have a more appealing location and overall atmosphere, particularly when choosing between these two beaches near Chora.

Tip: Don’t miss the picturesque 17th-century church of Agia Irini near the port entrance.

Tzamaria Beach

Nestled between Gialos Beach and Koumbara Beach, Tzamaria Beach remains one of Ios island’s hidden gems, offering a peaceful escape from the crowds. With its small pebbles, crystal-clear waters, and surrounding rocks that protect the bay from strong winds, Tzamaria provides a tranquil setting for relaxation and swimming.

From the shore, you can also enjoy a lovely view of the church of Agia Irini, which is located on the opposite side of the bay. In my opinion, Tzamaria Beach is the perfect spot for enjoying the island’s natural beauty in peace and quiet.

The beach is non-organized, so you need to bring your own drinks and snacks, but please be mindful of keeping the beach clean. Hopefully, this beautiful beach will remain untouched.

Koumbara Beach

Only 2 kilometers from the port of Ios, Koumbara Beach, also known as Koumpara, features a stunning shoreline and shallow, clear waters, perfect for swimming and watersports. This organized beach is famous for its breathtaking sunset views and its popular beach club.

You’ll also find a charming tavern, called Polydoros, serving delicious local cuisine just around the corner of the beach. We decided to have dinner there after a local recommended it to us, and we were delighted by every dish we tried.

Optional: Visit the lighthouse of Ios at Cape Fanari

Just a short distance from Koumbara Beach lies the picturesque lighthouse of Ios, perched at Cape Fanari. A leisurely hike along the small stone wall leads you straight down the peninsula to the charming lighthouse at its tip. During the hike, you can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding landscape and the deep blue Agean sea.

Day 3 in Ios: Learn About Ios’ History and Culture

On our final day in Ios, we delved deeper into the island’s rich history and culture. Our itinerary included visits to significant historical sites and a traditional cheesery, offering a glimpse into the authentic character of Ios.

Visit the Archaeological Site of Skarkos

At the heart of Ios lies the Archaeological Site of Skarkos, a circular settlement that is a testament to the island’s ancient past. This well-preserved prehistoric settlement, dating back to the early Bronze Age, is one of the largest known and most significant prehistoric sites in the Cyclades. It offers a fascinating insight into Ios’s captivating heritage.

Learn more about the history of the Aegean as you explore this remarkable archaeological site. Discover remnants of ancient buildings, stone-paved floors, a sophisticated drainage system, and a cemetery, shedding light on early Cycladic life. Explore the site’s treasures, including pottery, tools, and kitchen utensils, which are showcased in the Archaeological Museum in Chora’s Town Hall.

Visiting Skarkos is an immersive journey into Ios’ rich archaeological heritage and a must-visit if you are a history enthusiast. The entry fee is 4 euros, and the site is open daily from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, except for Tuesdays.

Stop by the Statues of Kulozis

En route to Homer’s Tomb, you’ll encounter the Statues of Kulozis. Though information about these roadside statues is limited, they provide an interesting photo opportunity along the way.

Discover Homer’s Tomb

Located at the island’s northern tip, Homer’s Tomb has become a major tourist attraction in Ios. Legend has it that this idyllic spot marks the final resting place of the great Greek poet Homer. While the evidence supporting this claim may be inconclusive, the site holds immense allure for history lovers and admirers of Homer’s timeless epics, the Odyssey and the Iliad.

Admission to Homer’s Tomb is free. You won’t need much time to explore this site, but I highly recommend taking a moment to soak in the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and the deep blue Aegean Sea. It’s such an idyllic spot!

Visit the Diaseli Traditional Cheesery & Museum

The next stop is the Diaseli Traditional Cheesery & Museum. Here, we did a guided tour and indulged in a delightful cheese tasting session at this charming family-owned establishment. The small museum offers fascinating insights into the daily life and resilience of locals over the centuries, and the informative narration by the knowledgeable host about the traditional cheese-making process added to the experience.

During the tasting, we could try a variety of handmade products, including different types of cheese, accompanied by thyme and heather honey, pure olive oil, fresh salad, and homemade wine. It offered the perfect chance to savor the authentic flavors of the island.

Visiting Diaseli was undoubtedly one of our favorite experiences on Ios, and we can highly recommend it.

Explore the ruins of Paleokastro

The Venetian Castle known as Paleokastro, which translates into “old castle”, is located on the eastern shore of Ios. Perched atop the island’s highest hill, the castle’s remains transport you back in time. Originally built as a defensive stronghold against pirates, the isolated location now serves as a serene backdrop, allowing visitors to imagine life within its walls during the Middle Ages.

You can park your car in a small designated area beside the road, then follow the stone-built path for approximately 10 minutes until you reach the castle. Wander through the remains of its once-sturdy walls and internal structures, including a beautiful Byzantine chapel. And don’t forget to take in the incredible views from this historic site.

Entry to the ruins of Paleokastro is free.

Enjoy sunset drinks with a view

To wrap up your final day in Ios, there’s no better experience than sipping sunset drinks amidst the breathtaking vistas of the island and the sea. We visited Alma Sunset Bar and enjoyed delicious cocktails as we watched a mesmerizing sunset from the infinity pool. It was the perfect end to our Ios trip!

Tip: Make sure to book your spot in advance when visiting during sunset hours to ensure you don’t miss out on this magical experience.
