If you’re traveling to Rhodes from the United States, the most common route is to fly into Athens. From there, you can catch a direct flight to Rhodes, with several airlines offering multiple daily services. This short, one-hour flight ensures you’ll be on the island in no time.

For those living in Europe, there are even more direct flight options available. Many countries, including the UK, offer direct flights to Rhodes, making it easy to reach this stunning Greek island without the need for layovers. In general, you can find frequent flights from major European cities, just check for your nearest airport. We flew directly to Rhodes from Frankfurt, Germany.

How to Get Around Rhodes, Greece

The easiest and most convenient way to get around Rhodes is by car. We rented a car during all our Rhodes trips and absolutely loved exploring the island this way. There are so many amazing places to visit in Rhodes, from hidden beaches to charming villages and historical sites. Having a car gives you the flexibility and freedom to see them all at your own pace. Therefore, we highly recommend renting a car during your stay.

Driving in Rhodes is relatively easy, and the roads are well-maintained. Rental services are available at the airport and in major towns, offering a range of vehicles to suit your needs. With a car, you can easily reach the island’s top attractions, which are part of our 5-day Rhodes itinerary.

Best Time to Visit Rhodes

Similar to other Greek islands, the best time to visit Rhodes is from late spring to early autumn, with June being an ideal month, in our experience. We’ve visited Rhodes twice in June and once in July, and we preferred June due to the pleasant weather and lesser crowds. The temperatures are warm but not too hot, making it perfect for sightseeing and beach activities.

July and August can be quite busy and hotter, so if you enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere, June is the perfect choice. Moreover, the island is in full bloom in early summer, which adds to its natural beauty and charm.

Where to Stay in Rhodes, Greece

Day 1 in Rhodes: Explore Rhodes Town

On the first day of our Rhodes itinerary, you will visit the Old Town of Rhodes and the Acropolis of Rhodes. Let’s start with what to see in Rhodes Town:

Take a walk through the Medieval City

Begin your exploration of Rhodes by taking a walk through the Medieval City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This ancient city is encircled by impressive city walls that transport you back in time. I really loved getting lost in the picturesque streets and charming corners of the Old Town.

If you are looking for a place to fuel up with coffee or ice cream, or want to browse some shops for souvenirs, make sure to head to Hippocrates Square.

Visit the church of Panagia tou Bourgou

Next, make your way to the impressive Church of Panagia tou Bourgou, also known as the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Burgh. This 14th-century Byzantine church is a beautiful example of medieval religious architecture. It features a charming blend of Gothic and Byzantine styles.

Located not far from the bustling Hippocrates Square, it offers a peaceful escape from the lively surroundings.

Visit the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, also known as the Kastello, is a must-see attraction in the Medieval City of Rhodes. This imposing fortress, originally built in the 14th century, showcases impressive architecture and historical artifacts.

As you explore its grand halls and courtyards, you’ll gain insight into the medieval knights’ life and their influence on Rhodes. The palace is open every day from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Stroll through the Street of the Knights

A stroll through the Street of the Knights is one of the best free things to do in Rhodes’ Old Town. This historic street, lined with medieval buildings, gives you a glimpse into the lives of the Knights Hospitaller who once resided here.

Right by the Street of the Knights, you’ll find the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, housed in the historic Hospital of the Knights. Admission costs 6€.

Discover the legend of the Colossus of Rhodes at Mandraki Harbor

At Mandraki Harbor, next to the New Town of Rhodes, you can immerse yourself in the legend of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. According to the myth, this colossal statue of the sun god Helios once stood at the entrance to the Rhodes Old Port. With over 30 meters of height, the Colossus of Rhodes was the tallest statue of the ancient world.

Though the original statue was destroyed by an earthquake, the harbor still pays homage to this monumental figure. Today, you can see two modern statues of deer, which mark the spot where the Colossus is believed to have stood.

Stop by the Windmills of Mandraki

The three iconic windmills of Mandraki Harbor are probably the most famous windmills in Rhodes. These historic structures date back to the 14th century and once played a crucial role in the island’s grain milling industry, as they processed the grains that came with merchant ships. Their traditional design and strategic location make them a charming reminder of Rhodes’ maritime past.

Positioned along the waterfront, they provide a picturesque backdrop against the sparkling harbor and offer an excellent photo opportunity as well as a glimpse into the island’s rich history.

Explore the Acropolis of Rhodes and the Ancient Olympic Stadium

Wrap up your first day in Rhodes with a visit to the Acropolis of Rhodes, a significant archaeological site offering fascinating insights into the island’s ancient past. Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the Acropolis features the ruins of several important structures, including the Temple of Apollo, which once served as a major religious center.

Next to the Temple of Apollo, you will find the well-preserved Olympic Stadium, a testament to the athletic and cultural practices of ancient Rhodes. It was once a vibrant venue where athletes competed for honor and acclaim.

Day 2 in Rhodes: Visit Lindos Town

On your second day in Rhodes, you will explore the picturesque town of Lindos and its beautiful surroundings. In my opinion, Lindos is one of the best places to visit in Rhodes.

Marvel at the Acropolis of Lindos

Start your second day at the iconic Acropolis of Lindos, perched on a steep cliff at 116 meter height. The history of this ancient site dates back to the 10th century BC. The Acropolis of Lindos belongs to my favorite historical site on the island – so don’t miss it!

Visiting the Acropolis feels like stepping back in time. Besides the impressive ancient ruins and the Temple of Athena Lindia, I absolutely loved the breathtaking views of the surrounding area, including the deep-blue waters and the charming village of Lindos below.

To make the most of your visit, I recommend arriving right at opening time, 8 AM, to avoid the crowds and the midday heat. Please note that you need to book a ticket in advance with a selected time slot for entry.

The walk up to the Acropolis takes about 20 – 30 minutes. I advise against taking a donkey up the hill for the welfare of the animals if the trek is manageable for you.

Explore the charming town of Lindos

After visiting the Acropolis, take time to explore the picturesque town of Lindos itself. I absolutely loved Lindos for its charming alleys, whitewashed houses, and vibrant bougainvillea flowers that adorn every corner.

Stroll through its narrow streets, lined with quaint shops and local eateries, and soak in the traditional Greek atmosphere. Lindos’ beauty and laid-back vibe make it a delightful place to wander and get lost.

Relax or have lunch at Lindos Beach

After exploring the Acropolis and wandering through Lindos Town, it’s time to unwind at Lindos Beach. This lovely beach, with its clear turquoise waters and golden sand, is perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the seaside restaurants or simply soak up the sun and take a refreshing swim – the choice is yours!

Visit St. Pauls Bay

End your day with a visit to St. Paul’s Bay, a stunning cove near Lindos Town. Known for its crystal-clear waters and incredible scenery, this bay is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and cliff jumping. It’s also home to one of the most popular beach clubs in Rhodes, ideal if you want to splurge a bit.

Day 3 in Rhodes: Rhodes Island Road Trip

On your third day in Rhodes, you’ll visit some of the island’s top attractions, including the Valley of the Butterflies and Kallithea Springs. Additionally, you’ll discover hidden gems off the beaten path, such as the charming village of Psinthos, the historic Filerimos Monastery, and the ruins of Monolithos Castle.

Stroll through Psinthos

Start your third day in Rhodes by visiting the charming village of Psinthos, located in the heart of the island. This picturesque village offers a glimpse into traditional Greek life with its quaint atmosphere and friendly locals. Make sure to visit the main square, where you’ll find a beautiful church.

Take some time to wander through the streets of Psinthos. If you’re hungry, don’t miss the opportunity to dine at one of the local traditional tavernas, where you can savor authentic Greek cuisine.

Visit the Valley of Butterflies

Next, head to the enchanting Valley of the Butterflies, a unique natural park that’s a must-see in Rhodes. This lush, green valley is home to thousands of Jersey tiger moths, creating a mesmerizing sight during the summer months.

Stroll along the shaded paths, crossing wooden bridges and following streams, while enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the beauty of the butterflies. The best time to visit is early in the morning to avoid crowds and see the butterflies at their most active. It’s a captivating experience, perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

The Valley of Butterflies is open every day from 8 AM to 7 PM. Tickets are 6 Euros during the summer months (children under 12 years old are free).

Stop by the Filerimos Monastery

The next stop is the Filerimos Monastery, a serene and historic site perched on a hill overlooking the island. The monastery, dating back to the 15th century, offers a peaceful escape with its beautiful gardens, impressive architecture, and numerous peacocks roaming the grounds.

As you explore, you’ll discover the ancient ruins of the Temple of Athena and the Byzantine church. Don’t miss the iconic “Way of the Cross”, a path lined with 14 stations (holy icons) that leads to a massive cross, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

The Filerimos Monastery is open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, with an entry fee of 6 Euros, while the Filerimos Cross viewpoint is free to visit.

Relax at Kallithea Springs

Kallithea Springs is a stunning and historic spa complex located on the coast of Rhodes. Known for its therapeutic waters and beautiful architecture, Kallithea Springs offers a perfect blend of relaxation and history. You can wander through the elegant gardens, marvel at the intricate mosaics, and enjoy the serene atmosphere.

The crystal-clear waters of the bay are also perfect for a refreshing swim or some snorkeling. The entry fee is 5 Euros. Renting a sunbed for two, including an umbrella, costs 30 Euros during the main season.

Discover Archangelos

Next, explore Archangelos, the largest village on the island of Rhodes. This vibrant village is rich in culture and history. Visit the church of the Archangel Michael, known for its beautiful frescoes and bell tower, and stroll through the picturesque streets, where you can find local shops, traditional tavernas, and lovely cafes.

Near the village, you can also find the ruins of the medieval Archangelos Fort Castle up on a hill, offering scenic views of the surroundings.

Optional: Seven Springs

Seven Springs is an optional stop on our Rhodes itinerary. While it’s a nice place for a photo, we only visited because it was close to our hotel. The area features a small lake, a water canal tunnel, and several springs surrounded by lush greenery.

However, if you’re not staying nearby, I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way to visit, as it may not be worth the detour in my opinion. Please also keep in mind that the springs might be dry during the summer.

Watch the sunset at the Castle of Monolithos

End your third day by watching the sunset at Monolithos Castle, one of our favorite sunset spots in Rhodes. The ruins of this old castle, situated on a cliff at 236 meters height, offer a breathtaking view of the sun setting into the sea. It’s a magical experience you shouldn’t miss!

The hike up to the castle is relatively easy, but I still recommend wearing proper shoes for a comfortable and safe climb.

Day 4 in Rhodes: Discover Rhodes’ Beautiful Beaches

Rhodes is famous for its stunning beaches, featuring crystal-clear turquoise waters and scenic views.
So, you’ll explore some of the island’s most beautiful beaches on day 4 of our Rhodes itinerary.

Anthony Quinn Bay and Beach

Start your day at Anthony Quinn Bay and Beach, one of the most stunning spots on the island. First, head up to the Anthony Quinn Bay viewpoint to soak in the spectacular views of the bay from above. You’ll also find a cute little chapel at the top, adding to the charm of the location.

After taking in the panoramic views, make your way down to the beach itself. The crystal-clear waters and scenic surroundings make it a perfect spot for relaxing, swimming, and snorkeling. Anthony Quinn Beach is covered with small pebbles and rocks, so consider wearing water shoes for more comfort.

For refreshments, I recommend heading to Kounna Beach & Resto Bar, located directly at the bay. I really loved the vibe at this beach bar – it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink while soaking in the amazing views.

Ladiko Beach

Next, head to Ladiko Beach, located at the neighboring bay just beside Anthony Quinn Bay. This beautiful, rocky bay is full of charm and offers clear, turquoise waters similar to Anthnony Quinn Beach. It’s great for swimming and snorkeling. However, due to the pebbles and rocks, wearing water shoes is recommended.

Tsambika Beach and Tsambika Monastery

If you prefer fine sandy beaches, Tsambika Beach is a great alternative. This organized beach features umbrellas, sunbeds, and various watersports, making it perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. The crystal-clear waters and golden sands create a beautiful setting for swimming and sunbathing.

Nearby, you’ll find Tsambika Monastery, located on a hill with a stunning view of Tsambika Beach below. To reach the monastery, you’ll need to climb 300 steps. The climb is relatively easy but can be challenging in the midday heat, so it’s best to visit in the morning or late afternoon. The panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort, offering a breathtaking perspective of the beach and surrounding landscape.

Optional: Agathi Beach, Faliraki Beach, Ellie Beach

For those who still have energy for more beach hopping, Rhodes has plenty of beautiful beaches to explore. Agathi Beach is a serene spot with fine golden sand and shallow waters, ideal for a relaxing swim.

Faliraki Beach is one of the island’s most popular beaches, offering a lively atmosphere with numerous restaurants, bars, and watersports activities.

Ellie Beach, located near Rhodes Town, features clear waters and a long stretch of pebbly shoreline. Each of these beaches has its unique charm and is worth a visit if you’re looking to experience more of Rhodes’ beautiful coastline.

Day 5 in Rhodes: Relax at your Hotel & Sailing Cruise

On the final day of our 5-day Rhodes itinerary, you can unwind and enjoy some leisure time at your hotel. Moreover, you’ll embark on an unforgettable sailing cruise to experience the island’s stunning coast from the sea.

Our Top Tip: Sentido Port Royal Villas and Spa

While staying at Sentido Port Royal Villas and Spa, we definitely had to make use of their amazing facilities. We relaxed by the different pools and the beach and tried their incredible spa. It was the perfect way to unwind after exploring the island during the past few days.

Enjoy a sailing cruise in Rhodes

To end our stay in Rhodes with an unforgettable memory, we did an All-inclusive Sunset Sailing Cruise. This incredible experience allowed us to enjoy the scenic coastline from the water, with breathtaking views as the sun set over the Aegean Sea.

The cruise included delicious food (a buffet-style Mediterranean dinner) and drinks (including Greek wine). It was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Rhodes and the perfect conclusion to our trip!
