Why Visit Alsace at Christmas?
Alsace isn’t just another stop on the European Christmas market map – it’s where centuries-old traditions meet postcard-perfect scenery. The region’s blend of French and German heritage shapes everything from the architecture to the food stalls. You’ll find steaming mugs of vin chaud alongside hearty flammekueche, and handcrafted ornaments sold beneath the charming half-timbered houses.
What makes Alsace stand out is the way the festivities transform entire towns, not just a central square. In places like Colmar, every street corner, courtyard, and canal bridge is dressed for the season. Smaller villages along the Alsace wine route – like Eguisheim or Riquewihr – glow with lanterns and fairy lights, making an evening stroll feel like stepping into a storybook.
There’s also an intimacy here you don’t always get in the bigger European cities. Markets are often set against medieval backdrops, and many stalls are run by local artisans whose families have been part of the tradition for generations. Whether you’re after authentic regional crafts, a glass of warm spiced wine, or simply the joy of wandering cobbled lanes in the crisp winter air, Alsace delivers it all in a way that feels both magical and personal.

10 Best Alsace Christmas Markets 2026 (Including Dates)
Colmar Christmas Market
If there’s one place that captures the magic of Christmas in Alsace, it’s Colmar. This medieval town transforms into a winter wonderland each year, with six themed markets scattered across its historic center. The half-timbered houses are draped in lights, canals shimmer with reflections of Christmas trees, and every square feels like a scene from a holiday movie.
Colmar’s markets are wonderfully walkable as the city center is closed to cars during the festive season, and each one has its own character. You’ll find a market dedicated to local artisans (handcraft Christmas market at the Koifhus), a gourmet market for regional specialties (Place Jeanne d’Arc), and even a children’s market complete with a merry-go-round (Petite Venise). The atmosphere is both lively and intimate, especially as dusk falls and the lanterns begin to glow, making Colmar one of the best Christmas markets in France.
While Colmar might be the most popular Christmas market in Alsace, it’s absolutely worth the hype. I wouldn’t skip it. The decorations are incredible, and the whole town has a dreamy, fairy-tale feel that’s perfect for the season. There are photo opportunities around every corner, and it exceeded my expectations, becoming one of my favorite Christmas markets in Europe.

Eguisheim Christmas Market
Set along the Alsace Wine Route, Eguisheim is a circular medieval village that feels like it was built for Christmas. Its true Alsatian Christmas market is smaller than Colmar or Strasbourg, but that’s part of its charm. Colorful half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes, and a small central square with a decorated fountain create a warm, fairytale-like setting. During the festive season, the whole village is covered in lights and greenery.
Eguisheim’s Christmas market focuses on authenticity, Alsatian traditions, and local craftsmanship. You’ll find handmade ornaments, artisanal food products, and mulled wine served by the village’s own winemakers. The cozy scale means you can wander at a relaxed pace, taking in every festive detail without the pressure of big crowds.
We loved following the circular walkway and pausing to admire the decorations on all the half-timbered façades and balconies. Compared to the larger, busier markets in the region, Eguisheim felt much more intimate – a place where you can chat with stall owners, taste local treats, and truly soak in the atmosphere, camera in one hand and a warm cup of mulled wine in the other. No wonder its officially one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Must-try Food and Drinks at the Alsace Christmas Markets
No visit to the Alsace region at Christmas is complete without indulging in its festive flavors. Start with a steaming cup of Glühwein – the classic spiced mulled wine that comes in red, white, or even rosé, often made with local artisan wines. For something richer, try Eierpunsch, the German-style eggnog, or warm up with Kinderpunsch, a non-alcoholic punch perfect for kids, drivers, and non-drinkers.
When it comes to food, the choices are as tempting as the decorations. Savory favorites include Flammekueche, a thin, crispy flatbread topped with cream, onions, and bacon; Bratwurst, grilled to perfection; and Käsespätzle, cheesy German egg noodles with caramelized onions. Snack on giant Bretzels, nibble sweet candied almonds, and don’t leave without tasting Bredele, the traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies in every shape and flavor. For a final treat, enjoy a slice of Pain d’épices, the region’s fragrant gingerbread cake that pairs beautifully with mulled wine.

Where to Stay in Alsace
If you’re after convenience and atmosphere, Colmar is the perfect base. It has six different Christmas markets and is centrally located for exploring the region. Strasbourg works well if you’re arriving by TGV from Paris or Germany, with its grand “Capital of Christmas” market and plenty of centrally located hotels.
For a more intimate experience, consider staying in one of the smaller wine-route villages like Eguisheim or Riquewihr. Waking up to quiet cobbled streets and strolling to the market before the day-trippers arrive is an experience in itself.

Best Time to Visit the Alsace Christmas Markets
Most Alsace Christmas markets open in late November and run until Christmas Eve, though a few keep the magic going until December 30. If you can, aim for a weekday visit in early December. The lights and atmosphere are just as magical, but you’ll avoid the peak-season weekend crowds. Evenings are when the markets really shine, with twinkling lights and the scent of mulled wine in the crisp winter air.
Keep in mind that school holidays and Christmas breaks in France and Germany start around December 20. From that point on, you’ll see more families visiting the markets during the day as well, not just in the evenings, which can make the afternoons especially busy.
How to Get to Alsace, France
Reaching the Alsace region is generally straightforward, whether you’re coming from within France or abroad. If you’re starting your trip in Paris, the high-speed TGV train will have you in Strasbourg in under two hours, making it an easy journey for anyone short on time. You can also fly into nearby airports such as Strasbourg, Basel-Mulhouse, or even Zurich, then continue by train or rental car.
How to Get Around Alsace
For those planning to experience Christmas in Alsace, a rental car is the best option for exploring multiple towns and markets at your own pace. It allows you to linger at your favorite markets, skip overcrowded buses and trains, and follow your own schedule instead of timetables. Parking is relatively easy as well. Every Christmas market has designated parking areas, clearly marked with signs as you approach. In larger cities like Strasbourg and Colmar, you’ll also find parking garages right in the city center, making it easy to leave your car and walk straight into the festive atmosphere.
🚘 MY GO-TO CAR RENTAL COMPANY: DISCOVER CARS
When booking a rental car online, I personally recommend and always use Discover Cars. The platform compares both major international car rental companies and smaller local agencies, which often helps find better deals. Plus, there are no hidden costs and they offer free cancellation if your plans change. I typically opt for full coverage since the rates are very reasonable and it gives extra peace of mind while traveling.
That said, you can also use the high-speed TGV train and local TER trains to travel between the larger cities and villages.
For those based in Colmar without a car, the Alsace Christmas Shuttle is a festive way to visit multiple markets in one day.
- Line 1 & 2: Colmar → Kaysersberg → Riquewihr → Ribeauvillé → Colmar; Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 28 to December 21; €17 per ticket.
